Clips That Didnt Work

We had to re-film many clips because of small issues such as lighting, camera, actor issues. This is just a few examples of the clips we could not use.
Clip 1: The issues with this clip was the actor (Alex Halstead) was smiling this we felt was un natural so we had to redo this clip.
Clip 2: the issues with this clip was the camera was not straight and in line and in the reflection of the widow you could see my face and Howard Hastings face.

Institution and Distribution

I think an independent film institution would distribute our media film because we are not well known directors and we don't have well known actors, also the quality of filming wont be good enough for a major film institution like Warner Bros. The type of film institution that would distribute our film, could be Institutes like 'Warp Films'. Warp Films have made films like, This is England and 4 Lions these are films that not everyone has heard of. These institutions would be good for distributing our film as we are trying to apeal to an audience that like our genre so through these institutions reputation we would be able to apeal to our preferred target audience

Horror Film Research

Horror - an extremely strong feeling of fear and shock, or the frightening and shocking character of something, (definition).

The horror film genre is one that is meant to scare and thrill the viewer through either the supernatural or macabre (the use of death or disturbing scenes). This type of genre tends to overlap with other gene types for example, thrillers and supernatural. Most plots of horror films involve an evil force, event, or person commonly of supernatural origin that is in the everyday world. The typical settings for horror films are in place that would create fear for the viewer. They are also located in quiet places. For example; Forests, Dark Streets, Basements, Empty Houses/Sheds/Hotels/Schools, Run down cities, Urban Cities and Graveyards.

Diegetic and non-diegetic sound is very important in horror films as they create the fear and tension. Non-diegetic sounds as in the music can be added after the film has been added to emphasize parts of the film. Typical Sounds; Footsteps, Heart beat, People laughing, Screaming, Fast paced music, Creaking doors/furniture and Ghost noises, this is just a few examples of what you would likely hear in horror films.

Titling was shown before the film started only in Scream and Halloween, the tilting of Scream was shown in white and bold on a black background with also diegetic sound of screaming. Where as Insidious was shown in red on bold a black background. Also both do not show credits apart from the film studio who have made the film and whose presents the film.

Handheld shots are rarely used because they make it hard for the audience to understand the storyline. High and low angles shots are used a lot to show fear in the characters. Point of view shots are conventionally used in horror films. They are usually used to show what the antagonist can see and what the protagonist is seeing. This connotes fear and tension. Close up are also used in horror films a lot to show the reactions of the characters. This is a very effective when understanding the plot and storyline.

Editing is used to create unsettling tension and suspense with the film. This connotes the type of event that is happening and helps the audience relate and understand the storyline. For example; a long take might be used to create suspense for an event such as a killing. However if there was a chase, there would be a short takes and fast paced cutting to create the horror and tension.

Genre Representation

Characters:
In the horror genre the main protagonists is normally an innocent girl, the storyline tends to follow the girl around and she is normally the last alive. Other characters such as the male figure and the villain are featured and followed through out the film. The villain is seen as being the opposition to the main girl in most horror films. The male figure is seen as the one who is supposed to fight or protect the female. These characters are very important convention of horror films. other characters you find in horrors are non believers, hysterical character normally a girl, and some times a loved up couple.

Age:
Age is also another thing that helps each of the protagonists be represented in different ways, the innocent girl tends to be an older teenager or a young 20 year old. the 'hero' or male figure tends to be again about 20 years old and the villain can vary depending on the film it could be a young child like in Halloween or an adult like in scream.

Age Ratings

What does 12A rating mean?
Films classified 12A and video works classified 12 contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. Adults planning to take a child under 12 to view a 12A film should consider whether the film is suitable for that child.

What does 15 rating means?
No-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or buy/rent a 15 rated video. 15 rated works are not suitable for children under 15 years of age.

  •   strong violence
  •  frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***').
  •   portrayals of sexual activity
  •   strong verbal references to sex
  •   sexual nudity
  •   brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence
  •   discriminatory language or behaviour
  •   drug taking

  • What does 18 rating mean?
Films rated 18 are for adults. No-one under 18 is allowed to see an 18 film at the cinema or buy / rent an 18 rated video. No 18 rated works are suitable for children.

  •   very strong violence
  •   frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***') and / or very strong language (e.g. ‘c***’)
  •   strong portrayals of sexual activity
  •   scenes of sexual violence
  •   strong horror
  •   strong blood and gore
  •   real sex (in some circumstances)
  •   discriminatory language and behaviour

  • I think that we should give our film opening a 12 or 15 age restriction, as there would be strong violence.

    Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds divides a frame into nine sections. The rule of thirds is a concept in video and film production in which the frame is divided into nine imaginary sections, as illustrated on the right. This creates reference points which act as guides for framing the image. Points (or lines) of interest should occur at 1/3 or 2/3 of the way up (or across) the frame, rather than in the centre. Like many rules of     framing, this is not always necessary (or desirable) but it is one of those rules you should understand well before you break it. In most "people shots", the main line of interest is the line going through the eyes. In this shot, the eyes are placed approximately 1/3 of the way down the frame.

    180 degree rule

1st shotIn this example the camera is located to the left. The imaginary line is shown in red. The resulting shot shows the subject walking from right to left, establishing the viewer's position and orientation relative to her.

1st shotIn this example the camera has crossed the line. As you can see in the resulting shot, the view of the subject is reversed and she appears to be walking from right to left.

    Preliminary Task

This is our preliminary task, Howard and I made a video to test our camera skills and a few rules for example the 180 Degree Rule and Rule of Thirds. We didn't correctly use the rule of 180 towards the end of the video, in our main task we have decided to fully focus on this rule. We were told to focus on someone walking through a door smoothly and having a conversation, so here it is.

    Sound Track Research and Evaluation

After doing research into horror opening and listening to some of the sound tracks on them. We knew that we would have to take into consideration some factors such as target audience, setting and story line. After analysing them we decided that we needed a sound track that created tension and suspense during the opening of the film. We then needed to decide on the type of sound we wanted, we finally after listening to several different sound tracks decided on a scary piano soundtrack.

We then went on to look into possible sound effects that we could add to our film opening, we again looked at different films and listened to the different sounds that had been added in the types of sounds that we had seen been added in were sounds like, doors being opened, stabbing sounds and screams laughter and breathing. we have found a website called free sfx http://www.freesfx.co.uk/.
